The Daniel Fast

A funny thing happened yesterday. I'm not quite sure how we got on the subject but I was explaining to my little brother what a "Daniel Fast" was. Well I'm not exactly sure about the story but I'm pretty sure in the book of Daniel it tells what happened. Regardless, I explained to him that a Daniel fast was no meat and no sweets - pretty much just vegetables, fruits, and water.

He took it in for a second and said, and I quote, "Did they even have sweets back then? Oh, yeah they did. They had donuts." My first reaction was, 'you've been watching way too much vegetables', but he said to look it up in the book of Leviticus. Much to my surprise, he was actually correct. If you don't believe me, I'll even include the scripture below...

1 “When you bring a grain offering to the LORD, the offering must consist of choice flour. You are to pour olive oil on it and sprinkle it with incense.
(Skipping to verse 4)
4 “When you present some kind of baked bread as a grain offering, it must be made of choice flour mixed with olive oil but without any yeast. It may be presented in the form of cakes mixed with olive oil or wafers spread with olive oil. 5 If your grain offering is cooked on a griddle, it must be made of choice flour and olive oil, and it must contain no yeast. 6 Break it into pieces and pour oil on it; it is a kind of grain offering. 7 If your offering is prepared in a pan, it also must be made of choice flour and olive oil.
- Leviticus Chapter 2, New Living Translation

Nifty, eh?
